Day 5: Victoria Falls and the Devil’s Pool.
We had our first nights sleep on camp in a tent aaand I think ive finally gotten over jet lag! Woo! It’s a pretty good set up. We have our own tent for the whole trip and we all get sleeping pads too so its not too bad.
We had booked our trip to Livingstone island for 9am so we got a ride to this beautiful hotel where the boat took off from. It was called the Royal Livingstone and it is so strange seeing such an uperclass fancy pants hotel out in the middle of Zambia! But anyways we caught a small boat across to Livingstone island which only took like 3 minutes. On the ride over we saw our first really wild animal from the “Big 5”! A momma elephant and her baby. So cool, they were just chilling on one of the other smaller islands :). I got a photo so you’ll have to see when I ipload them. So the Island was right on the edge of the falls and basically just sand and a kind of volcanic looking stone.
Our guide was this awesome guy with big long dreadlocks and he had a 2pac tattoo haha. He was kinda stern and grumpy at first but I ended up crackig him. He led us across the island where we could have our first look at the falls. They were incredible.. They dropped a few hundred metres probably, and there was a beautiful DOUBLE rainbow over them along with blue skies and hot African sun. The guide held my hand and motioned that i could get closer to the edge. It’s hard to imagine where all of that water goes! The Zambezi River must be pretty huge to keep those Falls flowing.
After having our first look it was time to swim! We gave our cameras to this one guy who would walk across in the shallower part
Near the edge and they took photos of us over there. We had to swim about 30m across the river to get to the rock on the edge of the falls and the devil’s pool. I was so excited I wanted to go first but they showed your camera and ask who’s it was then you went in that order. I was second though and did a big jump into the little 3m pool and may have got some of the Zambezi up my nose.. But it was aweeesome. Like a little hot tub on the edge of a giant waterfall. Except the water was so refreshing, warm but still a nice change from the 35c heat. We hung out in the pool for a bit, and he held our legs so we could get pictures of us off the edge. Then he said we had to go have breakfast but i asked him if i could just jump one more time and he was like… Ahh no… Well… Okay. Hahahah so we got to jump again :)
Yay. Awesome.
After that we went back to the tents to have breakfast but the cook said two people would have to go to a private table because they wouldnt fit, so Steph and I got our own private dining table overlooking the zambezi! Pretty cool. And the food was like fine dining fancy (again wait for photos) but yes it was pretty awesome!!
After that one of the girls we went with had to go to the Zimbabwe border to pick up her bungee jumping dvd and asked us to share the cab with her on our way home.. She said she’d only be 20 mins but ended up taking like 40 mins… So annoying because we were just waiting in the car on the side of the road with the driver and it must have been like 40 degrees. People were coming up trying to sell us things and we just kept saying no! Anyways she finlly came back and we started driving off … But then our tyre burst!! Bloody hell! Had to wait another 20 mins for a taxi to get us and take us back. In the heat. Rrrg. When we got back to the campground we just jumped in the pool.
Ended up hanging around the pool for a few hours then booked the Zambezi River Sunset Cruise (also known as the booze cruise) it included all alcohol and food for free.
Let’s just say we got a little drunk. It was cool though cos a lot of the people from our tour group came too, even the oldies!
About 5 minutes after our cruise took off we spotted some elephants eating on the river bank!! So cool! We looped over to the other side of the river then to see a group of hippos bobbing in the water!!! Eee so many animals and i was just execting unlimited alcohol hahaha!
We kept an eye on the elephants and they ended up crossing the entire river and hopping back up on the bank on the other side! These two elephants swam across the whole river apparently hoping to meet up with the rest of their herd. So cool. Caught up with the hippos again too and saw them on land how fat they are :) and also saw a crocolate sunning himself on the bank! Turned out to be a pretty awesome cruise so was happy we did that :)
Yeeee pretty sweet day, day 5 was!
