Johannesburg, South Africa.
Day 1:
Well we arrived at the airport and a man was frantically waving a handmade sign with ‘ERIN SHAND’ on it towards us… We were the only backpackers off the flight so easy to spot I guess! Everyone else seemed to be rich white South Africans…!
After a long windey drive through the suburbs (Peak hour so freeway would have been crazy) we made it to the backpackers. Two things I was surprised about: 1. Litter. When we first left the airport I was quite shocked at how much litter was on the side of the road. But as we got further along there seemed to be groups of people picking it up too. 2. Walls, fences and barbed wire. People werent joking when they tell you that EVERY house is surrounded by a wall, spiked fence or barbed wire. Kinda scary. The backpackers in enclosed though so thats good. Seems like a really safe area.
After we got to the backpackers we went around the corner to get some din and have a drink! (pictured) We are so tired but wanted to celebraaate. I had this awesome fajita and steph had a stir fry. Sooo African. The place we went to was actually African food but we were still just a little too tired and feeble to venture out into the world of marrow bones and chicken liver…
Maybe tomorrow night! For now - passing out. X
